Special Celebrations with Birthday Wishes

Birthday Wishes is an inspiring organization that provides birthday parties for homeless children living in shelters. There are more than 96,000 homeless children in Massachusetts alone and Birthday Wishes provides birthday parties for more than 900 children each year.

Their mission is simple: To bring birthday parties to homeless children. Birthday Wishes recognizes the importance of a birthday in a child’s life and believes that the gift of a birthday celebration provides normalcy, joy and hope in these children’s otherwise unsettled lives.

You can help by providing donations, volunteering time, sponsor a party or shelter or even throw a Birthday Wishes birthday party. We can make a difference, learn more about how to help Birthday Wishes.

Artsy Partsy! Get Inspired and Create Your Own!

Do you have a little art lover in the family? Check out this art inspired party idea!

Set the tone for your colorful party, with these fun art party themed invitations! They are a perfect fit for this party theme, right?

Let your little artists decorate their own edible art using food coloring and sugar cookies, Martha gives you the how-to here. Cover table tops with white butcher paper, and then provide a rainbow selection of crayons. The party guests will be able to create multiple masterpieces and your table will stay clean too. Is there a birthday girl? I think this crayon apron would be the perfect party attire!

Keep party guests occupied (and intrigued) by having them help make crayons from broken pieces. You can even ask guests to bring broken crayons to the party. Check out the scoop on safely making your own crayons here. Once they have cooled, wrap crayons in small plastic bags, tie with a bow and send home as party favor! Aren’t they cool looking?

Don’t want to make them at the party? You can buy them premade and still have adorable favors.

Another favor idea is to gift guests with their own personalize smock when they arrive to the party (bonus: this will make for darling photos of the party!)

Don’t forget the cake! This rainbow cake is the perfect addition to any art themed party. Yes, you can make this! Get all the instructions over at the Omnomicon Blog and get started!

Twitter Party Dessert!

Not sure why it has taken me this long to share these adorable Twitter cupcakes with you. I guess Twitter party food is on my mind since I just hosted a fabulous Twitter Party with Julie of Free Birthday Treats. It was such a hit that we’ve decided to do this shin dig monthly (details coming soon)! Now if we can just get Bakerella’s yummy and tweet cupcakes to serve each time. Regardless, enjoy this virtual cupcake and follow the baking goddess herself at @Bakerella (you won’t be disappointed).

Lavender Baby Shower Theme

To be honest, I am not a big fan of anything in the purple color family. However, I was creating this inspiration board for a lovely lavender shower and have come to love it. The soft sophisticated color scheme shouts romantic and classy in the same breath. I encourage you to consider lavender as your next party theme- whether it be a baby shower, bridal shower, or even Sunday brunch. Go ahead, try it!

My first thought was this would be a perfect palette for a baby shower. More modern than your traditional pink or blue theme, this lavender color scheme is soft enough for the baby aspect, but classy enough to make the mom-to-be feel really honored.

Above from left:

  • Skip the baby or bridal shower cakes and serve these petite brownie bites from Martha Stewart, iced with a simple purple flower.
  • Simple yet sophisticated table scape featured on The Knot keeps it comfortable and still with a formal feel. Setting a nice table is a great way to honor the mom {or bride} to be.
  • Serve guests champagne with a sprig of lavender for a romantic aroma {Martha Stewart}.
  • A fun treat for party guests, a purple fortune cookie soap favor.

Party: Create a Chic Hawaiian Feel

If you are hosting a party soon {whether it be a birthday or just a get-together}, why not add some Hawaiian flare? Adding tropical touches can really set the mood of your party. Instead of throwing your typical Luau themed party {you know with those plastic leis} try adding just a few Hawaiian inspired touches. This will make your party feel more classy and authentic.

To serve your drinks or appetizers, set up a unique table/bar in a snap! Use a surfboard instead of a table! You can set it atop a small table (for support) or even use two TV trays to prop it up on.

Some simple party food ideas are shrimp skewers, grilled pineapple, and maybe coconut flavored desserts. If you are serving adult drinks, try this cocktail recipe:

Tidal Wave

1½ ounces Malibu (or other coconut-flavored rum)
1 ounce blue curacao
¾ ounces fresh lime juice
½ ounce amaretto
1 tablespoon coconut cream
1 teaspoon superfine sugar lime slice

As for decor, the key here is to keep it simple. No need for tall paper palm trees. You can pull off a Hawaiian feel without crepe paper fish and plastic leis. For table decor, try gathering a few colorful votive candles. Place them on top of random glass cake stands and place a few stemless orchids to add that paradise feel. You can also use items such as sea shells and sand dollars to make your theme come together.

Add simple touches throughout your event space. I love this idea of using a fresh tropical flower to serve as a napkin ring. You can even tie a single flower around items such as a glass pitcher, basket of silverware, or hand towel in the restroom.

In order to have a successful Hawaiian themed party, simple and thoughtful touches really are key. When I think of Hawaii, I think of a natural and easy going flare. If you plan your party with “natural” and “easy going” in mind– you will have stunning results that don’t require a lot of effort!
